I've actually read about this guy while in Siberia but it's a huge effort to get to his place and we couldn't be bothered.
I think the impact of the story as narrated by a cocky America college student is somewhat diminished for me but the scenery alone makes me nostalgic.

The video is no longer avail on The Age... but I know the guy you're talking about. I even have a suspicion that Dad went and met him at some point, or smth like that. I recall having a video of him back in Melbourne amongst my parents' things. Who knows - may be he really is the Messiah :)
It's possible but after reading russian articles about him, he seems more like a collector of lost souls.
